Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD)

Picture
Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD) is a devastating plague on our beautiful Caribbean Coral Reefs. Originating in Florida, the disease has made its way down to our tropical island home. SCTLD (pronounced skittles) affects over 20 species of hard corals like Brain Coral, Star Coral and Maze Coral, to name a few in the Caribbean marine ecosystem. This disease is having a significant impact on the oceanic ecosystem as it moves in an unprecedented rate of infection. Alarmingly, this disease can have an extremely high rate of mortality, killing up to 80-100% of individually infected coral colonies. Preexisting coral diseases such as White Plague, White Band, and Black Band diseases, while able to have virulent outbreaks among coral colonies, do not kill as quickly or infect as large of areas as the Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease.

By working together, we can combine our efforts toward protecting the magnificent reefs of the United States Virgin Islands for generations to come. The CORE Foundation has been working hard to help get the disease under control and committing our efforts in collaboration with the Coastal Zone Management (CZM) division of the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Parks and Natural Resources (DPNR). Our aim is to treat as many of the SCTLD infected corals as possible and hopefully slow the spread of this disease. We believe saving any coral colony is a noble effort. Using the well known antibiotic, amoxicillin, combined with a carrier agent called Base2b creates effective SCTLD infected coral treatment.  Base2b was designed by Ocean Alchemists, specifically for the purpose of treating corals infected with the SCTLD.  With this composite treatment, strike teams are able to treat the infected coral with a time proven "fire break" in the area between the dead portion of a coral and the remaining live portion of the coral. Without your support, we will be facing a major loss of hard corals and biodiversity in America's Paradise, the United States Virgin Islands. Please consider donating today to assist the CORE Foundation's (a 501-(c)(3) non-profit) efforts to preserve our coral reefs, which in turn protect our island home.
