educational outreach Programming
Life is about Community. Community is about togetherness. Togetherness is about working together and giving back to the community that supported you. Community is based on the people and the environment that supports the expansion and health of the community. To effectively reach all audience groups, multiple education outreach programs are important. Public Awareness Presentations, Invasive Species Classroom presentations as well as participating in Environmental Events annually, are several ways the Caribbean Invasive Lionfish Response Program has reached out to the community and its visitors.

PUBLIC AWARENESS PRESENTATIONS
Public awareness is most effective, when education is built to reach all age groups of the community. CORE presentation's provide clear facts about the invasion and the current activities taking place to manage it. Presentations cover biology, feeding habits, habitat ranges as well as how the participant can be part of the solution.
Throughout the year, the CORE Foundation provides several public presentations for the communities of the U.S.V.I.. CORE's regional partners, Ecotono in Puerto Rico and Reef Guardians in the B.V.I. conduct presentations in their respective areas. CORE assists with presentations by providing educational materials or assisting with neighboring presentations.

FISHING TOURNAMENTS
Invasive Lionfish Derbies
The non-profit organization REEF has lead the charge educating the public while hosting and assisting communities with their own Invasive Lionfish Derbies. Invasive Lionfish Derbies have been an important way to couple public awareness with immediate action.
Derbies have been very successful increasing awareness, while extracting large amounts of invasive lionfish in a short period of time. Along with decreasing population densities, events such as these provide large amounts of data that can be utilized.
Along with data, specimens are often used for dissection, scientific studies or consumption. Data collected assists with understanding population densities, distribution and frequency. Demonstrations on safely cleaning lionfish as well as several ways to cook lionfish are a great way to end up the derby.
Derbies educate the public that lionfish are safe to eat and easy to prepare. Demonstrations empower the public to continue fishing lionfish safely.
Invasive Lionfish Derbies are an excellent way to provide education, proper lionfish handling, cooking preparation and inviting the public to consume the lionfish.

Spearfishing Tournaments
Spearfishing tournaments have been a very popular annual event in most regions. Game fish caught while freediving have been the main focus in the past. In the last decade, spearfishing tournaments have added the Red Lionfish (Pterois volitans and Pterois miles) as a point scoring category.
In many tournaments, Lionfish have been included as a side tournament category. Lionfish included in these tournaments are given a separate prize and are kept out of total scoring of the tournament. In some tournaments, lionfish have been accepted towards the total points scored in the tournament. Regardless of the level of inclusion, the spearfishing community has been an outstanding steward in educating the populace. |
